Effective June 7, 2022, U.S. Trademark Registration Certificates Will Be Electronic

Beginning June 7, 2022, the USPTO will issue U.S. trademark registration certificates electronically using the USPTO’s Trademark Status and Document Retrieval (TSDR) system, continuing its march toward full electronic processing of trademark applications and registrations. Once it is issued, the electronic registration certificate will be the official registration certificate.

The USPTO will issue registrations electronically, using the Director’s electronic signature and a digital seal to validate the registration. The formal registration certificate will be uploaded to the TSDR database by the USPTO. An electronic notice will be sent to the trademark owner and any email addresses on file with a link to see the certificate once it is issued. The electronic registration certificate will include information on registration maintenance requirements under sections 8 and 71 of the Trademark Act of 1946. 1058, 1141, 15 U.S.C. (k). Trademark owners will be able to see, download, and print a complete copy of the registration certificate using the emailed link.

Trademark owners will be able to obtain paper “presentation” copies suitable for framing for a charge after June 7, 2022. Trademark owners who file an initial application on or after the implementation date can obtain presentation copies through the Trademark Electronic Application System for $25 per copy (TEAS). Trademark owners who file the first application before implementation receives a complimentary presentation copy. Trademark owners will be able to request certified copies of their registration for a charge in the future. Certified copies of trademark registrations can still be requested after June 7, 2022, for a cost.
